Duncan, Mark D.: - Dr. Mark D. Duncan is a cancer surgeon and full-time faculty member of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.' Dr. Duncan specializes in gastrointestinal surgical oncology including surgery of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, colon and rectum, and retroperitoneal sarcoma.'He holds joint appointments as an Associate Professor in the Departments of Surgery and Oncology.'Dr. Duncan is the Chief of Surgical Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center; he is the Chairman of the Cancer Committee and directs the weekly Tumor Board there.''Dr. Duncan has ongoing research and publications on gastric and esophageal cancer, and was funded by an NIH grant to study gastroesophageal tumorigenesis.'He received the Richard Starr Ross Clinician Scientist Award from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for his research on gastroesophageal tumors.'He has given many national presentations on cancer surgery and research, and has given international talks on cancer surgery in Europe and the Middle East.'He has received the Golden Apple teaching award in the School of Medicine, and has been recognized for excellence in resident education.'He is on the selection committee for residents applying for surgery training at Johns Hopkins.''Dr. Duncan received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University in molecular biology and his medical degree in 1987 from the Mayo Medical School, Mayo Clinic. His surgical training was at Georgetown University including an additional two-year surgical gastrointestinal research fellowship. He served on the faculty of Georgetown University and the V.A. Medical Center, Washington DC before joining the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 1996. Dr. Duncan is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society for Clinical Oncology, the Southern Surgical Society, the Society of University Surgeons, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the Organisation mondiale d'Etudes Spécialisées sur les maladies de l'Oesophage (World Organization for the Study of Disease of the Esophagus).'He is a member of the Editorial Board for the ''''''''''' The American Journal of Hematology/Oncology and serves as a reviewer for several major cancer journals.'Dr. Duncan is also certified as a coach for ice hockey for the Naval Academy Youth Hockey program, and has coached soccer and baseball teams.'His wife, Kimberly L.K. Duncan, Ph.D., is a noted cancer researcher and pharmacologist who now is the Director of the Bioscience Program (Integrated Health Sciences) at the Tai Sophia Institute in Columbia, Maryland.
