Carlos L�pez-Ot�n, professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology internationally recognized for his work on the human genome, aging, and cancer, traces the history of medicine to show how our concept of health has evolved toward a true medicine of health.
Drawing on recent research, the author proposes that health is not merely the absence of disease but the balance among nine cellular and molecular keys that enable optimal body function. He explains how physical and mental aspects intertwine and offers practical guidance to improve wellbeing.

Carlos López-Otín es profesor de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular en la Universidad de Oviedo, especialista en cáncer y envejecimiento. El trabajo del grupo que dirige ha permitido el descubrimiento de más de 60 nuevos genes humanos y el análisis de sus funciones en la progresión tumoral y en otros procesos normales y patológicos. Además, ha contribuido a la anotación del genoma humano y de otros organismos de interés biomédico.
Desde 2010, codirige la contribución española del Consorcio Internacional del Genoma del Cáncer, que ha descifrado el genoma de centenares de pacientes con cáncer. Entre sus trabajos más recientes destacan el descubrimiento de dos nuevos síndromes de envejecimiento acelerado, el hallazgo de nuevos genes causantes de muerte súbita y melanoma hereditario, la definición de las claves moleculares de la salud y del envejecimiento, la detección de bacterias pro-longevidad y el diseño de estrategias de edición génica para el tratamiento de la progeria.
Carlos López-Otín es académico de la Academia Europea y de la Real Academia de Ciencias de España, y doctor honoris causa por varias universidades españolas y extranjeras. A lo largo de su carrera científica ha recibido diversas distinciones como el Premio Europeo FEBS de Bioquímica, el Premio DuPont de Ciencias de la Vida, el Premio Carmen y Severo Ochoa, el Premio México de Ciencia y Tecnología, el Premio Rey Jaime I de Investigación y el Premio Nacional de Investigación Santiago Ramón y Cajal.
Carlos López-Otín is a professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Oviedo, Specialist in cancer and aging. The work of the group he leads has enabled the discovery of more than 60 new human genes and the analysis of their functions in tumor progression and other normal and pathological processes. He has also contributed to the annotation of the human genome and other organisms of biomedical interest.
Since 2010, he has co-directed the Spanish contribution to the International Cancer Genome Consortium, which has decoded the genome of hundreds of cancer patients. Among his most recent work are the discovery of two new accelerated aging syndromes, the identification of new genes responsible for sudden death and hereditary melanoma, the definition of the molecular keys to health and aging, the detection of pro-longevity bacteria, and the design of gene-editing strategies for the treatment of progeria.
Carlos López-Otín is a member of the European Academy and the Royal Academy of Sciences of Spain, and doctor honoris causa from several universities in Spain and abroad. Throughout his scientific career he has received various distinctions such as the European FEBS Prize in Biochemistry, the DuPont Prize in Life Sciences, the Carmen and Severo Ochoa Prize, the Mexico Prize for Science and Technology, the Rey Jaime I Research Prize, and the National Research Prize Santiago Ramón y Cajal.
