About The Author

John Charles Van Dyke (1856–1932) was a prominent American art historian, critic, and nature writer. Educated at Columbia and in Europe, he became a professor of art history at Rutgers College in 1891. Known for his clear writing and deep appreciation of art and nature, he authored influential works like The Desert and Art for Art’s Sake. Van Dyke helped popularize the American Southwest and shaped the discourse on American art and landscapes. He was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1908.
