Bevor Alexander von Humboldt den amerikanischen Kontinent betrat, hatten drei Jahrhunderte Entdeckungs- und Kolonialgeschichte bereits ein Bild der dann von ihm bereisten Länder vermittelt. Die geographischen Gegebenheiten dieser Länder waren in Grundzügen bekannt, koloniale Territorien bis zu einem gewissen Grad erschlossen. Erkundung und Erschlie ung hatten sich aber in den Grenzen vorwissenschaftlicher Expansion gehalten. Erst um die Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts war ein aufklärerisches, nun dezidiert wissenschaftliches Interesse in weltweiten Reiseunternehmungen breiter wirksam geworden. Cooks Weltumsegelungen waren charakteristisch für den Beginn dieser wissenschaftlichen Erschlie ung der au ereuropäischen Erdteile. Humboldt selbst betont im "Kosmos", was er den frühen Anregern des "wissenschaftlichen Naturstudiums" verdankt: "Der Schriftsteller, welcher in unserer vaterländischen Litteratur nach meinem Gefühle am kräftigsten und am gelungensten den Weg in dieser Richtung eröffnet hat, ist mein berühmter Lehrer und Freund Georg Forster gewesen. Durch ihn begann eine neue Aera wissenschaftlicher Reisen ..." Mit der "Reise durch Venezuela" vervollständigt Margot Faak die Reihe der von ihr herausgegebenen amerikanischen Reisetagebücher Alexander von Humboldts. Dieser (chronologisch) erste Band schildert den Beginn der Reise in Frankreich und führt über die Kanarischen Inseln durch Venezuela und endet mit der Ankunft auf Kuba. In ihrer Einleitung schildert M. Faak ausführlich die Bedingungen und den Verlauf der Humboldt'schen Reise ebenso wie Struktur und Inhalt der Tagebuch-Manuskripte einerseits und der Druckfassung "Relation historique" andererseits.
