Owing to the various causes that gave rise to this European and international current Philhellenism has found expression in many forms: in literature, in the press, in the arts, in diplomacy, in travel literature and other forms of spiritual, political, social and religious life in Europe. The research work on Philhellenism has been able to establish some driving forces behind the rise of the Philhellenic movement the most important of which being classical tradition, new humanism and romanticism, but also the social contexts of Christian philanthropy, the principles of humanity and brotherhood, and last but not least certain political factors pertaining to the era after the Napoleonic wars. Besides the historical philhellenic movement referring to the Greek Independence, Philhellenism as continuous intellectual, ethical and social stance and through its international character has contributed over the centuries to advancing the process of European integration.
