Der vorliegenden Arbeit dient Dar es Salaam, einstige Hauptstadt Deutsch-Ostafrikas und heute wichtigste Stadt Tansanias, als Fallbeispiel für die Entwicklung einer dualen Stadtplanungs-Methodik. Auf deren Basis werden Lösungsvorschläge für eine zeitgemä e Restrukturierung der Waterfront Dar es Salaams erarbeitet. Zunächst wird der geschichtliche Hintergrund der Stadt beleuchtet, bevor die Küstenregion in ihren historischen Kontext gestellt wird. Anhand teilweise bisher unveröffentlichter Pläne entwickelt sich eine vollständige Stadtgeschichte, mit einem Exkurs zum Einfluss Ernst Mays auf afrikanische Stadtplanungen.

Auf Grundlage der Space Syntax Methode wird das Untersuchungsgebiet anschlie end in sieben zeitlich markanten Abschnitten analysiert, ergänzt durch eigene Beobachtungen und Untersuchungen. Ergebnis sind schlüssige Umsetzungsvorschläge für die einzelnen Hafenbereiche, die anhand von Beispielen anderer Hafenrestrukturierungen auch grafisch erläutert werden.

Die daraus resultierenden konkreten Planungen bedienen sich punktueller Interventionen. Ihr Ziel ist die Suche nach integrativen Bindegliedern zwischen Einwohnern und Besuchern sowie die Beteiligung der einheimischen Bevölkerung am wirtschaftlichen Fortschritt. Der Stadt soll zu einer unverwechselbaren, eigenen Identität verholfen werden. Diese bezieht sich einerseits auf ihre traditionelle Vergangenheit und schafft andererseits neue Attraktoren für Einwohner und Besucher. Durch die Restrukturierung der Kernzone der Stadt in Verbindung mit einem neuen Verständnis für ihre Bürger und Besucher erhält Dar es Salaam die Chance, sich im Netz der Städte dieser Welt zu positionieren und wirtschaftlich am globalen Spiel zu partizipieren.

About The Author

Christine Kohlert studierte Architektur in München und ist ausgebildete Regierungsbaumeisterin. Sie lebte mit ihrer Familie drei Jahre in Dar es Salaam und lehrte dort als Dozentin Architekturgeschichte und Städtebau. Zur Zeit arbeitet sie als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Technischen Universität in Dresden.
