Si queremos comprender c�mo funciona la creaci�n a trav�s de la palabra, y la manipulaci�n a trav�s de la historia, es importante conocer la dimensi�n donde �sta ocurre: el tiempo, as� como descubrir la relatividad de este �ltimo.
Entendemos y dotamos de sentido al mundo a trav�s de la palabra, y desde que despert� en nuestra mente la capacidad del asombro y la duda, comenzamos a construir narrativas y todo tipo de relatos simb�licos que nos den explicaciones ante la inmensidad de la existencia.
Nacieron como uno mismo, humanidad, palabra y mitolog�a.
Hablamos y contamos historias.
Eso es lo que hacemos a lo largo de toda nuestra vida, como individuos y como especie. Eso es lo que nos hace humanos.
Hacemos historias y vivimos dentro de ellas. Habitamos una historia colectiva que compartimos con una comunidad, que es comunidad gracias a que todos se cuentan la misma historia, y habitamos tambi�n dentro de nuestra historia individual.
La que nos contamos a nivel colectivo, cualquiera que sea dicho colectivo, nos da una de tantas respuestas a la pregunta "qui�nes somos"; la individual, �sa que nos contamos acerca de nosotros mismos, evidentemente responde la pregunta sustancial: qui�n soy yo.
Para qu� sirve la historia actualmente? Es m�s, qu� historia debemos ense�ar a las nuevas generaciones nacidas entre finales del siglo XX y principios del XXI? O mejor a�n: Qu� pasado exponer ante unos alumnos que son en parte herederos de los vencedores espa�oles de la Reconquista (contra el islam), mientras que otros lo son de la Conquista (de Am�rica)?.
La respuesta a estos interrogantes tiene en parte que ver con aquello a lo que aplicamos la etiqueta historia, se�ala Serge Gruzinski en este s�lido trabajo que, en la versi�n espa�ola, comparte el elocuente y atractivo t�tulo -procedente de su original francesa- de L'histoire, pour quoi faire ? No se trata tanto de subrayar que nuestra manera de considerar el mundo actual parece con frecuencia propia de otra �poca como de indicar que en los �ltimos cuarenta a�os se han producido notables cambios y perturbaciones que socavan el eurocentrismo en el que c�modamente est�bamos instalados desde que a principios del siglo XIX surgieran los Estados-naci�n. La historia no puede reducirse a un relato �nico, a una especie de marcha forzada hacia la naci�n. Tampoco se trata de trocar el viejo y autocomplaciente eurocentrismo de las historias nacionales europeas por un sinocentrismo no mucho m�s atractivo, pero si en auge gracias al superventas de Gavin Menzies 1421: El a�o en que China descubri� el mundo (2002). Hoy es imposible interpretar todo desde un rinc�n del mundo, subraya Gruzinski siguiendo la estela de los postcolonial studies. Comprender de qu� est� hecho el presente es tan complicado como reconstruir un pasado solo con los fragmentos que se han conservado de �l. Por eso hay que comenzar con un trabajo de localizaci�n y de rigurosa contextualizaci�n en el que la imagen, con su particular l�xico y sintaxis, nos proporciona imprescindibles pistas para perseverar.
