Mai 17 wurde Germanicus Caesar mit einem Triumph "de Cheruscis Chattisque et Angrivariis quaeque aliae nationes usque ad Albim colunt" geehrt. Dieser Triumph bildete den offiziellen Abschluss einer Reihe von Feldz�gen im rechtsrheinischen Germanien, deren Ziele und Strategie entscheidend durch die Varus-Niederlage im Jahre 9 n.Chr. bestimmt worden waren. Die Schmach der Niederlage lastete schwer auf dem r�mischen Selbstbewusstsein und verlangte nach Rache. Umso bedeutender war ein erfolgreicher Abschluss der Feldz�ge, der das Prestige der r�mischen Waffen vor den Germanen, anderen V�lkern und der r�mischen �ffentlichkeit wiederherstellen sollte. Der Triumph des Germanicus �ber die V�lker bis zur Elbe war damit ein weithin sichtbares Symbol der St�rke und des Stolzes Roms. �ber das tats�chliche Ergebnis der Feldz�ge konnte er jedoch nicht lange hinwegt�uschen: Zwar konnten die Germanen in mehreren Schlachten besiegt und zwei der drei unter Varus verlorenen Legionsadler zur�ckgewonnen werden. Zum Zeitpunkt der Abberufung des Germanicus durch Tiberius konnte von einer Unterwerfung der Gegner im Gebiet bis zur Elbe jedoch keine Rede sein. Die triumphale Ehrung des Germanicus entsprach in keinster Weise dem, was wirklich erreicht worden war. So markiert das Ende der Germanicus-Feldz�ge nicht etwa den Beginn einer r�mischen Herrschaft im rechtsrheinischen Germanien, sondern im Gegenteil die Aufgabe der offensiven Politik im Nordosten und den dauerhaften R�ckzug Roms auf die Rheingrenze. Die Fiktion eines besiegten Germaniens, die durch den Triumph heraufbeschworen wurde, �berlebte den Tod des Germanicus nicht - daf�r waren die tats�chlichen Verh�ltnisse zu offensichtlich.
