Die Küsten des Meeres und das Binnenland sind reich besetzt mit Städten, die teils neu gegründet, teils unter euch und von euch gefördert wurden." (Romrede. Aelius Aristides, 93-94) Die vorliegende Arbeit zum Seminar "Reisen in der Antike" beschäftigt sich mit einer antiken Persönlichkeit, die für das Kriterium "Reisen" besonders hervorsticht, dem sogenannten "Reisekaiser" Hadrian (Mortensen, Hadrian, S. 179). Wie Aelius Aristides in seiner Romrede oben anmerkte, gab es bis Hadrian keinen Kaiser, der so viele Städte in den Provinzen durchreiste wie er. Hadrian verbrachte während seiner 21-Jährigen Regierungszeit ganze 11 Jahre fern von Rom auf Reisen (Mortensen, Hadrian, S. 174), was ihn nicht nur im Zusammenhang mit dem Thema "Reisen in der Antike" zu einer exponierten Persönlichkeit macht. Im Folgenden sollen Hadrians Reisen, insbesondere die der Quellenstelle 13,1-13,4 der Vita Hadriani in der Historia Augusta, näher untersucht werden. Zunächst ist es vonnöten, allgemeine Informationen über Kaiser Hadrians Herrschaft zur Kenntnis zu nehmen (Kapitel 1). In Kapitel 2 werden Hadrians Reisen mit seiner au enpolitischen Tätigkeit in Verbindung gebracht und mögliche Beweggründe seiner Reisetätigkeit näher erläutert. Kapitel 3 beschäftigt sich besonders mit der Überlieferung seiner Reisen in der Vita Hadriani der Historia Augusta.
