The book records the important events of the freedom struggle chronologically from 1857 to 1947. It covers the entire freedom struggle in its seventeen chapters. The first chapter introduces the history of Freedom Movement of India. Consequent chapters are The Revolt of 1857, The Role of Renaissance in National Movement, The Role of Western Education and Other Factors in National Awakening, The Origin and Growth of the Indian National Congress, The Moderates and Their Achievements (1885–1905), The Surat Split and After, Partition of Bengal and Swadeshi Movement, The Home Rule Movement, The Terrorist Movement, The Impact of World war I on Indian Politics, Gandhiji and the Freedom Movement (1920–1930), Gandhiji and the Freedom Movement (1930–1935), India and the Second World War, From Quit India Movement to Independence, The Origin and Growth of Communalism, and The Heroic Role of Freedom Fighters. The last chapter gives the importance to the heroic role of the freedom fighters. In the intervening chapters, the history of Freedom Movement is traced in a simple manner to fulfil the requirements of the students and the common readers. The role of Mahatma Gandhi in the Nationalist Movement is described very beautifully in this book. More emphasis is put on the Religious Renaissance for the inauguration of the freedom struggle. All the important events of the movement have been well elaborated.

Prof. N. Jayapalan, M.A. (History and Political Science), M.Phil. (History), Ph.D. (History), has retired from Government Arts College (Autonomous), Karur, Tamil Nadu. A keen participant at seminars and conferences connected with Indian History and Political Science, Prof. Jayapalan has authored several books on History and Political Science including Indian Society and Social Institutions, History of India, History of World Civilisation, Problems of Indian Education, Comprehensive Modern Political Analysis, Comprehensive Study of Aristotle, Comprehensive Study of Plato, Comprehensive History of Political Thought, Social and Cultural History of India Since 1556, Sociological Theories, History of English Literature, Indian Administration, History of the United State of America, Human Rights, and Historiography. He is one of the most popular authors in Tamil Nadu.
