From James the Just, the brother of Jesus and leader of the Jerusalem church, through the great schisms of Ephesus and Chalcedon, to the Empress Theodora and the missionary Jacob Baradaeus, this book traces the continuous thread of the Jacobite (Miaphysite) tradition-a tradition that preserved pure monotheism against Pauline innovations of the Trinity and the divinity of Christ.

In the 7th century, this current re-emerged under a new name, shaped by messianic Jewish movements, liberation from Byzantine oppression, and the political consolidation of the Marwanid (Umayyad) dynasty. The result was what we now call Islam.
