Written by the renowned Dr Mohammad Yasin and edited by Madhavi Yasin, Islam in India: A Reading in History is a compelling collection of five essays and a monograph focused on Medieval and Modern Indian history. The essay on “Ibn Khaldun” examines his revolutionary approach to history, highlighting his pioneering efforts as the first historian to identify patterns in the political and social evolution of human societies. The essay on “Al-Biruni” showcases the work of the famous scholar believed to have been the first scientific Indologist. The essay on “Sufi Silsilas” offers a thoughtful critique of the various religious orders that emerged in India. In contrast, the detailed essay on Indo-Islamic architecture traces the evolution of this distinctive style from its inception to its most glorious testaments. The monograph on “Sayyid Ahmad Shahid” is particularly notable for drawing on previously untapped sources to present a scholarly analysis of his mission and movement, offering fresh insights into the development of the two-nation theory. The final essay explores the various Islamic sects in India, offering a nuanced portrayal of the community's rich diversity of beliefs and practices.
Dr Mohammad Yasin received his education from the universities of Allahabad and Lucknow. He remained closely associated with his alma mater from 1950 to 1961, playing a pivotal role in establishing the postgraduate Department of History at Jammu (1963–1965) and later at Srinagar. A distinguished scholar in Indo-Islamic history, Dr Yasin authored eight books and was proficient in both Urdu and English, making significant contributions to scholarship in both languages.
