Das ist eine m�gliche Ortsbestimmung f�r j�disches Leben in Franken. Die Anf�nge sind in den St�dten zu suchen, wohin Juden vor knapp 1000 Jahren gezogen sind, um den Pogromen im Rheinland zu entfliehen. Wiederum auch aus den St�dten in Franken vertrieben blieben ihnen die D�rfer, wo sie unter verschiedenen Herrschaften ihre eigene Kultur leben konnten. Als ihnen die Gesetze wieder mehr Freiz�gigkeit gew�hrten, kamen sie in die St�dte zur�ck.

Duldung - Vertreibung - Emanzipation
Wo Juden gebraucht wurden, erfuhren sie Duldung. Aber selbst daf�r waren hohe Schutzgelder zu entrichten. Wo Juden als Konkurrenz gef�rchtet waren, mussten sie weichen, wenn man sie nicht gleich ermordete. Erst im 19. Jahrhundert erhielten sie neue Rechte, nahmen Anteil am �ffentlichen Leben und bef�rderten Kultur und Wirtschaft. Vernichtung und Neuanfang Der Antisemitismus war nie und nirgendwo v�llig verschwunden; mal zeigte er sich versteckter, manchmal offener. Doch ab 1933 waren dem Judenhass keine Grenzen mehr gesetzt. Manchen Juden gelang noch die Auswanderung. Wer blieb, wurde deportiert und umgebracht. Den Neuanfang wagten die wenigen Entwurzelten, die das Konzentrationslager �berlebt hatten, die displaced persons. Einige von ihnen blieben - erstaunlich genug - im Land der M�rder und gr�ndeten neue Gemeinden - wieder in den St�dten. Aufs Land zur�ckgekehrt sind sie nicht.

Anfeindung - Terror - Polizeischutz
Nicht aufgeh�rt haben die Anfeindungen aus manchen Teilen der Gesellschaft, die zu oft in blankem Terror m�nden. Kaum eine j�dische Institution kommt ohne den Schutz von Sicherheitskr�ften und Polizei aus. Ihre einsamen Friedh�fe sind meist geschlossen, denn den Gr�bern droht der Vandalismus.

J�disches Erbe
Es hat Jahrzehnte gedauert, bis sich ehrenamtliche Gruppen und Kommunen darauf besonnen haben, das j�dische Erbe zu bewahren und neu zu beleben. W�hrend der Reichspogromnacht nicht zerst�rte Synagogen dienten lange als Schuppen f�r alles M�gliche, ehe einige, aber l�ngst nicht alle restauriert und kulturellen oder musealen Zwecken zugef�hrt wurden.

Von alldem m�chte dieses Buch erz�hlen, wobei sich der Fotograf Helmut Meyer zur Capellen und der evangelische Theologe Reiner S�rries nur zu bewusst sind, dass sie nur punktuell und ausschnittsweise agieren k�nnen. 1000 Jahre Geschichte lassen sich nicht zwischen zwei Buchdeckeln komprimieren. Sie hoffen jedoch, dass sie Leserinnen und Leser nicht nur zu einer virtuellen Zeitreise einladen, sondern zu Reisen mit eigener Anschauung anregen k�nnen.

About The Author

Reiner Sörries, born in Nuremberg in 1952, is a pastor, professor for Christian archeology and art history at the University of Erlangen and was director of the Museum for Sepulchral Culture in Kassel until 2015. In retirement he devotes himself primarily to Islamic and Jewish art. He lives and works in Kröslin on the Baltic Sea.

Helmut Meyer zur Capellen, born in Lüneburg in 1945, attended the Bavarian State School for Photography in Munich and graduated with a master's degree. For decades he worked as an advertising photographer and was a co-owner of an advertising agency. He has also worked as a photographer for international picture agencies since 1972. After retiring in 2007, he photographed e.g. Jewish tombstones for the Steinheim Institute, but also for various museums and cultural projects. He lives and works in Eckental in Middle Franconia.
