We have all heard the phrase, "He's a Neanderthal," as though naming them were synonymous with clumsiness, brutality, or a lack of sensitivity. Yet all it takes is a closer look - at the bones, at the stone hearths, at the traces of flowers laid beside a body - to understand that this phrase never belonged to them. It speaks not of who they were, but of who we are.
The Neanderthals lived here, in these cold, open hills, long before Homo sapiens arrived from the south. Their settlements were small, intimate, made up of family groups that rarely exceeded twenty individuals. They needed nothing more. Their strength lay in closeness, in quiet cooperation, in the way each everyday gesture - tanning a hide, sharpening a flake of stone, sharing a piece of meat - reinforced a bond that required no words.
Their culture was simple only on the surface. We know they cared for their sick, that they buried their dead without signs of violence, that they placed objects beside them as though the farewell were a sacred act. We know they mastered fire, shaped stone, understood the rhythm of the seasons and the language of animals. And above all, we know they were not the brutal beings history once imagined. In many ways, they were more human than we are.
But one day, something changed. From the south came other humans. Taller, more agile, with finer tools and a more expansive way of life: Homo sapiens. They were not many at first, but their presence spread like a shadow that advanced without pause. And the Neanderthals, who had never sought conflict, did what they had always done to survive: they stepped aside. They moved into colder, harsher, more inhospitable lands. Not out of cowardice, but out of prudence. To protect their own.
There was mixing between the two species, yes, but it was uneven, residual, almost accidental. Today we carry between one and two per cent of their DNA, a faint trace that speaks more of isolated encounters than of true coexistence. It was not a merging of worlds. It was a brushing-past, a crossing born of proximity, of pressure, of the demographic fragility of those who lacked the numbers to resist. For in this story - in the story of our planet - the Neanderthals are the fragile side. The species that retreated to avoid the clash. The one that moved into the cold seeking safety, not knowing it was stepping onto a path with no return. The finest human adaptation ever to walk the Earth met the finest human evolution advancing without looking back.
This story tells of that first encounter between two worlds that, though almost identical in form, differed profoundly in essence. It is a story with names, with families, with doubts and hopes. An everyday tale, set forty-five thousand years ago. And if one listens closely, it is not as strange as it might seem. For history - ancient or modern - is always written by its protagonists, not by a narrator, however skilled. And here, at last, we let them speak.
