Die komplexen Phanomene rund um die Eingliederung Numidiens in den Machtbereich Roms wurden bisher mehrheitlich ausgehend von bipolaren Modellen wie Punisierung, Romanisierung, der Widerstandstheorie oder der Autochthonologie diskutiert. Alternativ hierzu zeichnet die vorliegende Studie basierend auf eigene Feldforschungen und am Fallbeispiel von sechs Mikroregionen das Panorama einer erstaunlich fruhen Auspragung der urbanen Zentren Numidiens nach, die in neuen diachronen Phasenplanen visualisiert wird. Anhand ausgewahlter Wohn- und Werkstattbereiche, Heiligtumer und des Grabwesens werden lokal- und regionalspezifische Charakteristika herausgearbeitet, die sich z. T. bis in die Kaiserzeit hielten. Gleichzeitig entstanden Neuschopfungen von Kult-, Grab-, Keramik- oder Architekturformen, die aber weder mit Resistenz lokaler, noch mit dem Zuzug neuer Gruppen, wie etwa romischer Burger, zu erklaren sind. Die komplexe Dekor- und Formensprache von Bauten und Fundobjekten belegt ebenso wie einige Wirtschaftszeugnisse (Marmorimporte und -exporte, Keramikimitation, Munzdistribution), dass die Stadte Numidiens seit dem 2. Jh. v. Chr. bestens in die mediterranen Handelsnetzwerke und kulturellen Transferprozesse eingebunden waren. Besonders zu Mittelitalien bestanden enge Beziehungen, die lange vor der Annexion Numidiens (46 v. Chr.) zu gegenseitiger Einflussnahme auf Politik und Territorium fuhrten. Heterogene Fundkontexte, Distributionsmechanismen und Inschriften zeigen aber, dass deutlich mehr Akteure an diesem Austausch teilnahmen als - wie bislang vermutet - nur die Konige Numidiens und die republikanischen Feldherren bzw. spater die Kaiser. Der gangigen Meinung einer 'dunklen Epoche Nordafrikas' werden somit eine Fulle neuer Grabungs- und Surveydaten sowie die Reevaluation alterer Forschungsergebnisse gegenubergestellt. Damit werden neue Erklarungsmodelle fur diese entscheidende Entwicklungsphase des Stadtewesens Nordafrikas und die Identitatsdiskurse dieser Zeit prasentiert.

About The Author

Ardeleanu, Stefan: - Stefan Ardeleanu studied Classical Archaeology, Ancient History and Byzantine Archaeology from 2006 to 2010 in Heidelberg, Rome and Aix-en-Provence before completing his PhD in 2015 at the Humboldt University in Berlin on pre- and early Roman Numidia. In 2016/17 he was awarded the 'Reisestipendium' of the German Archaeological Institute. Since 2015 he has worked on a post-doctoral project on Late Antique epitaphs and funerary contexts at the SFB 933 'Materiale Textkulturen' in Heidelberg. His main research focuses are: North Africa (Hellenistic times until Late Antiquity), Roman funerary reliefs, Late Antique burial customs and the perception of antiquity in modern politics and culture.
