Settlements were scattered, distances were great, and the authority of the young Republic of Texas was often limited beyond a few towns and rivers. In this environment, the Texas Rangers emerged as a small but effective force of mounted fighters who operated along the frontier's shifting edge.

On the Texas Frontier examines several key engagements fought between Texas Rangers, frontier volunteers, and their opponents during the years 1837 to 1860. Beginning with the Battle of Stone Houses in 1837 and concluding with the Battle of Pease River in 1860, the book follows the Rangers through a series of encounters that illustrate the evolving nature of frontier warfare.

Drawing on contemporary accounts, official reports, letters, and early histories, this work presents a narrative study of the Rangers in action. The battles described here reveal how small groups of mounted men operated across difficult terrain, relied on local knowledge, and adapted their tactics to meet both Mexican incursions and Comanche war parties.
