Durch die Kaiserkr nung Ottos I. 962 endete die kaiserlose Zeit in Westeuropa und die Tradition des R mischen und des Karolingerreichs wurde durch ihn wiederbelebt. Damit trat er gleichzeitig in Konkurrenz zum Byzantinischen Reich, das aus dem Ostr mischen Reich hervorgegangen war und nach dem Ende der Antike den staatsrechtlich begr ndeten Anspruch hatte, alleiniger Rechtsnachfolger der antiken r mischen Kaiser zu sein. Die Existenz von zwei Kaisern widerstrebte der universalen Auffassung des Kaisertums, wonach es nur einen Kaiser geben durfte. Beschr nkt wird sich auf die Beziehungen Ottos I. und Ottos II. zu Byzanz, beginnend mit der Kaiserkr nung Ottos I. Die Protagonisten auf byzantinischer Seite zu jener Zeit sind die Kaiser Nikephoros II. Phokas, Johannes I. Tzimiskes und Basileios II. Damit ist ein zeitlicher Rahmen von der Kaiserkr nung 962 bis zum Tode Ottos II. 983 gesteckt. Dabei wird vor allem auf die Geschehnisse in den von beiden Parteien beanspruchten Gebieten in Unter- und Mittelitalien und auf die Interpretation der Kaiserw rde unter Otto I. und Otto II., bzw. deren Akzeptanz auf byzantinischer Seite, eingegangen. Einen wichtigen Aspekt stellt dabei die Brautsuche Ottos I. f r seinen Sohn dar.
