Kann eine Epoche politischer Wirren, ökonomischen Niedergangs und zahlreicher militärischer Konflikte bedeutende architektonische Leistungen hervorbringen? Mit Blick auf das römische Reich während der Soldatenkaiserzeit des 3. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. wird diese Frage in der Forschung meist verneint. Man nimmt an, dass die Bauwirtschaft, die zuvor besonders in Kleinasien noch eine Fülle von öffentlichen Gro bauten realisiert hatte, in den Jahrzehnten nach 200 fast völlig zum Erliegen gekommen sei.
Diese Sicht der Dinge revidiert der Autor in wesentlichen Punkten. Eine ganze Reihe architektonischer Gro projekte in Side und Perge, den antiken Metropolen der Landschaft Pamphylien, datiert er anhand der Baubefunde und der inschriftlichen Quellen ins 3. Jahrhundert. Erstmals wird dabei der Versuch unternommen, mit Hilfe der ornamentierten Bauglieder die Stilentwicklung des pamphylischen Architekturschmucks an der Schwelle zur Spätantike nachzuzeichnen. So kann die Lücke zwischen dem gut erforschten kleinasiatischen Baudekor der Zeit um 200 und dem wohl bekannten des späten 4. Jahrhunderts an theodosianischen Bauten in Konstantinopel zumindest in Teilen geschlossen werden.

Christian Gliwitzky studierte in Mainz, Freiburg, Rom und Dresden und schloss mit dem Magister in Christlicher Archäologie und Byzantinischer Kunstgeschichte, mit der Promotion in Klassischer Archäologie und dem Staatsexamen in Altphilologie ab. Seit 2009 ist er Konservator an den Staatlichen Antikensammlungen und Glyptothek in München.
