Shattered Orders: The conclusion of World War I shattered long-standing empires, including the Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, and Russian empires.
The Versailles Catalyst: The 1919 Treaty of Versailles deeply humiliated Germany. Punitive "war guilt" clauses and crushing reparations sowed widespread resentment and psychological trauma.
Economic Ruin: Hyperinflation decimated the European middle class. Money became completely worthless, destroying social trust and driving desperate citizens toward political extremes.
Political Chaos: Fledgling democracies like the Weimar Republic suffered severe polarization. Center parties collapsed while radical factions utilized paramilitary forces, street violence, and mythic nationalist narratives to recruit followers.

The Ascent of Italian Fascism

Mussolini's Pivot: Benito Mussolini transitioned from a prominent revolutionary socialist into a fierce nationalist leader after being expelled from the socialist party for supporting WWI intervention.
The Blackshirts: Mussolini established the Squadristi (Blackshirts). This paramilitary wing leveraged organized terror, beatings, and assassinations to crush trade unions and leftist opponents.
The March on Rome: In October 1922, thousands of Blackshirts marched on the capital. King Victor Emmanuel III capitulated to avoid civil war, granting Mussolini a constitutional mandate to form a government.
Totalitarian Consolidation: Mussolini systematically built the world's first totalitarian state. Through the Acerbo Law, the suppression of opposition parties, and the OVRA secret police, individual liberties were entirely erased.
Societal Control: The regime mandated state corporatism, co-opted the Catholic Church via the 1929 Lateran Treaties, heavily indoctrinated youth through state school curricula, and established an intense cult of personality around "Il Duce".
