About The Book

Their terracotta sculptures, among the oldest large scale figurative works in Africa, reveal a people of remarkable skill and creativity.

Drawing on archaeological discoveries from sites such as Taruga, Samun Dukiya, and Katsina Ala, Rowan reconstructs a civilization known almost entirely through material remains. Sculpted clay figures with stylized faces, remnants of iron furnaces, and traces of settlements buried beneath the soil offer a glimpse into a world without written records. Through these fragments, a shared visual language and a complex society begin to emerge.

Rowan explores Nok daily life, craftsmanship, and exchange networks, while also examining the possible meanings behind their striking sculptures.
