Apr�s la d�faite de 1870, les troupes de forteresse constituent un corps indispensable pour la refonte de l'arm�e de la R�publique. Mais � mesure que l'id�ologie du tout offensif reprend le dessus, les fortifications tombent peu � peu en d�su�tude jusqu'au bain de sang de 1914. La belle tenue au feu de plusieurs garnisons n'enraie pas cette crise de confiance. Dans l'immense conflit qui s'engage, o� chaque ressource compte, les troupes de forteresse sont r�duites � leur plus simple expression. L'ann�e 1916 vient bouleverser compl�tement la donne. Contre toute attente, le d�but de la bataille de Verdun remet la fortification au premier plan. Avec l'ouverture des travaux 17 et l'enfouissement toujours plus pouss� des d�fenseurs, non plus sous les vo�tes de pierre de taille et les cuirasses de surface mais sous les forts, � plusieurs dizaines de m�tres de profondeur, la ligne Maginot trouve bien sa gen�se � Verdun. En 1940, les ouvrages de la nouvelle fortification abritent �galement des communaut�s hors normes, les �quipages. L'�tude de leur univers mental est fascinante.
