The importance of efficient urban governance needs no elaboration in an increasingly urbanising world. Cities with high population densities throw significant challenges of transportation, safety, urban revitalisation, social inclusion and cohesion, environmental protection, water, air, energy, sanitation and climate changes which will magnify in the near future if not properly addressed now. These socioeconomic changes necessitate augmentation of urban finances for investment in wellplanned urban development and to bring about reforms in governance to enforce efficient urban governance at all levels to cater to the needs of urbanites and to make cities inclusive, congestionfree, safe, resilient and sustainable in which all people have access to basic services, housing and mobility. The urban local governance structures, mechanism and arrangements should aim at facilitating the adoption and implementation of successful policies to meet the challenges of sustainable, safe and equitable urbanisation. This book discusses measures to stimulate revitalisation and foster better economic and social development through developing cooperation mechanism between local and national governments so that the challenges of urbanisation can be best utilised as opportunities of innovation, economic growth and employment.

Dr. C. Nagaraja Rao received his M.A. degree (1980) and Ph.D. (2010) from S.V.University, Tirupathi. Rao served as Deputy Field Officer (Tech) in the Directorate General of Security, Government of India (197678). He joined the Government of Andhra Pradesh as Municipal Commissioner in 1979 and served in various capacities till his retirement as Additional Director. His published papers include Urban Initiatives in Andhra Pradesh; Urban Poverty Alleviation in A.P.; Group Economic Activities in A.P.; Urban FinanceRevenue Improvement Action Plan and Housing for AllThe Indian Context, (Metropolitan Thematic Conference on Sustainable Urban Development, Montreal, Canada, October 2015). His other works include Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, his Life and Works (1986), Spiritual Culture of India and Other Essays (2001), Accountability of Urban Local Governments in India (2007). The present volume is the result of his vast experience that enabled him to probe into measures for sustainable urban development through improved governance.
