About The Book

Wenn auch Dusseldorf nicht zu den Zentren fruhneuzeitlicher Buchproduktion gehorte, so wurde hier doch zwischen 1555 und 1806 eine beachtliche Anzahl von Drucken hergestellt. Gestutzt auf Vorarbeiten u.a. von Ludwig Merlander aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, konnte die Universitats- und Landesbibliothek Dusseldorf in mehrjahrigen Recherchen rechtzeitig zum 450. Jubilaum des Buchdrucks in Dusseldorf sowohl im eigenen Bestand, als auch in den Bibliotheken und Archiven Dusseldorfs und anderer Stadte 862 Monographien und 30 Periodica mit Druck- oder Verlagsort Dusseldorf aus diesem Zeitraum ermitteln und erstmals vollstandig im vorliegenden Verzeichnis zusammenstellen. Sie schliesst damit eine Lucke, die schon in der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts erkannt, aber wegen des grossen Aufwandes nicht geschlossen werden konnte. Dusseldorf brachte als Residenzstadt zahlreiche Publikationen hervor, die dem Umfeld des Hofes, der Verwaltung oder Gesetzgebung zuzuordnen sind, so dass hier zahlreiche rechts-, verfassungs- und verwaltungsgeschichtliche Quellen erschlossen werden. Die Bandbreite ist jedoch wesentlich weiter und umfasst theologische Titel genauso wie solche aus dem spateren 18. Jahrhundert, die einer burgerlichen Kultur der Aufklarung verpflichtet sind. Ein Uberblick uber den Forschungsstand und ein kurzer Abriss der Geschichte des Buchgewerbes sollen nun gemeinsam mit der Bibliographie Einfuhrung, Arbeitsinstrument und Anstoss fur diejenigen sein, die sich in Zukunft mit der Druck-, aber auch der Kultur- und Geistesgeschichte Dusseldorfs von der Mitte des 16. bis zum Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts beschaftigen werden. Gleichzeitig leistet die Ermittlung der Drucker und Verleger sowie ihrer Produktion einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Wirtschaftsgeschichte Dusseldorfs und des Niederrheins, da Kooperationen mit und Abhangigkeiten von Druckern, Verlegern, Illustratoren und Kunstlern etwa aus Koln und Duisburg nachweisbar sind. Das Verzeichnis weist insgesamt den Weg zu einem wesentlichen Teil des kulturellen Lebens einer Residenzstadt der Fruhen Neuzeit und eroffnet so zahlreiche Forschungsperspektiven.
