Don Caillouette grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and he has firsthand experiences with hurricanes, because he has been in a number of hurricane events. Don holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography/Urban Studies from Southeastern Louisiana University. He has been involved in the field of urban planning for over thirty-five years. His career as a planner started in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana and his last years with St. Bernard Parish was being the Assistant Director for the Department of Safety and Permits. In 1987, he relocated to Venice, Florida to work for the City of Venice with the Planning Department. Don spend twenty-five years of service with the city. He has been involved in developing a number of disaster related documents including; several comprehensive plans, local mitigation strategy plans, along post disaster redevelopment plans. In 1994, he developed the concept of a Hurricane Tolerant Community for the City of Venice, Florida as part of a mitigation funded project. In 1994, the City of Venice and Don was the recipient of the 1994 Florida Planning and Zoning Association Outstanding Public Study Award for, "Creating a Hurricane Tolerant Community". His achievements include a number of planning awards for several of his books and hurricane mitigation projects. In 2010, he was the recipient of the 2010 Florida Planning and Zoning Association Outstanding Private Study Award for his latest book, "The Hurricane Book-Planning For a Hurricane Tolerant Lifestyle". In 2011, The City of Venice Mayor and City Council encouraged him to update and revised the original Hurricane Tolerant Community book. In 2013, he completed his drama, "Hurricane Secrets", a three act play along with his novel, "Hurricane Ramona". His other books within the Hurricane Tolerant Community book series are: The Hurricane Book-Planning For a Hurricane Tolerant Lifestyle (2011) and The Hurricane Book II- HTC Best Management Practices (2012). Don is single with three grandchildren. His interests include art and history.
