Fort-building. Mud explosions. A runaway dog. A maybe-wolf. A treasure ritual. A trap that works a little too well. Rusty Ruins the Fort and Other Important Things is a laugh-out-loud, heart-bright middle-grade adventure about four boys, one very enthusiastic dog, and the tiny emotional creatures-Flickerlings-who make childhood feel like a wild, wonderful circus.
Ethan, Theo, Owen, and a new recruit Hank wake up to the perfect day: sunshine, mud, and a backyard forest begging for a fort. They grab rope, snacks, treasures, and big ideas. What they don't know is that their Flickerlings-tiny, invisible emotional sidekicks-are coming too. And Flickerlings have opinions. Loud ones.
The boys start building the greatest fort their neighborhood has ever seen... until Rusty the dog spots a cat and blasts straight through the walls like a furry missile. Suddenly the day becomes a hilarious scramble of chasing Rusty, rebuilding the fort, arguing about traps, sneezing through allergies, falling into holes, and trying to keep their treasures safe from disaster (and from Rusty's nose).
Each boy's Flickerlings jump into action-bragging, panicking, joking, overthinking, cheering, and occasionally making things worse. Ethan's Emberwisps want to sprint into danger. Theo's Flickerlings can't decide whether to help or freak out. Owen's quiet crew prefers observing the chaos from a safe distance. Hank's Flickerlings just want him to finally feel like he belongs.
This is a story full of kid logic, muddy joy, and the kind of friendship adventures that feel huge when you're ten. There's a "wolf" that turns out to be something else entirely. There's a P-Perimeter that looks suspiciously like a potato. There's a treasure-burying ceremony that feels like magic. There's a trap that works a little too well. And there's Rusty-guided by his own instinct-sprites-who is absolutely living his best life.
As the boys race through the woods, solve problems, and accidentally create new ones, they discover something important: feelings are loud, friendship is messy, and even the worst moments can turn into the best stories.
Perfect for readers ages 7-12 who love humor, adventure, dogs, secret forts, and stories that understand how big childhood feelings can be, this book blends laugh-out-loud chaos with warm emotional intelligence. With its cast of Flickerlings-Accuser, Scout, Dash, Sniffle, Punster, Steady, and dozens more-it gives kids a playful language for understanding their inner world.
A joyful, funny, heart-smart adventure about friendship, imagination, and the unforgettable chaos of being a kid.
