Hei t es nun der, die oder das? Diese Frage ist nicht immer ganz einfach zu beantworten, da es keine allgemein festgelegten Regeln zur Genuszuweisung gibt. Bei einigen Substantiven erscheint die Herkunft des Genus nicht direkt ersichtlich, in vielen Fällen lässt es sich aber anhand einiger Kriterien erklären. Mit diesen Kriterien soll sich diese Arbeit befassen, um einen Überblick über die Möglichkeiten der Bestimmung des Genus zu geben. Die verschiedenen Arten von Kriterien und dessen Aussagekraft sollen vorgestellt und erläutert werden. Die Recherche stützt sich auf verschiedenste Literatur sowohl aus aktuellen als auch aus längst vergangenen Jahrzehnten, um ein möglichst umfangreiches Wissen über die verschiedenen Methoden zu erlangen. Zu Beginn der Arbeit soll zunächst ein grober Überblick über die betroffene Wortart, das Substantiv, gegeben werden, um die grammatische Einordnung des Substantivs genauer zu bestimmen. Darauf aufbauend wird dann eine Unterscheidung zwischen natürlichem Geschlecht, auch als Sexus bekannt, und grammatischem Geschlecht, dem Genus, getroffen, da diese fälschlicherweise häufig miteinander gleichgesetzt werden. Dabei sollen eventuelle Zusammenhänge, aber auch Unterscheidungen der beiden Geschlechterarten festgestellt werden. Im Anschluss sollen dann die semantischen und formalen Kriterien der Genuszuweisung genauer erklärt und mit Beispielen belegt werden. Darauffolgend beschäftigt sich die Arbeit dann mit den Substantiven, die ein doppeltes Genus aufweisen. Zu guter Letzt sollen anhand des Beispiels Nutella, bei dem das Genus nicht immer ganz klar ist, noch einmal alle vorgestellten Prinzipien angewendet und so dem Leser nähergebracht werden.
