Auslöser zur Schaffung des Werks war ein dreiwöchiger Kurzaufenthalt Thomas Manns im Waldsanatorium zu Davos im Jahre 1912, um seine wegen Temperaturschwankungen eingelieferte Ehefrau Katja zu besuchen. Diese Anstalt sollte ihm als Vorbild für das im Mittelpunkt des Zauberbergs stehende Sanatorium dienen, Thomas Mann hatte sich während seines kurzen Gastspiels "mit der ihm eigenen Akribie jene Einzelheiten notiert, die zwischen 1912 und 1914, sowie 1919 und 1924 ins Romanwerk eingehen sollten" . Das ursprünglich als satirisches Gegenstück zum Tod in Venedig konzipierte Mammutwerk - Mann arbeitete 12 Jahre daran, mit einer vierjährigen Unterbrechung von 1915 bis 1919 - "bietet zugleich Welthaltigkeit und Geschlossenheit, einen bemerkenswert internationalen Figurenreigen und mit dem Sanatoriumsschauplatz einen Handlungsraum, (...) in dem die Existenzen der Fürsten- und Künstler-Helden zentriert sind". Die hermetische Abgeschlossenheit des Berghofs, unter der sich das Kurleben abspielt, ist von zentraler Bedeutung für die Entwicklung der Romanfiguren: So können sich abseits der gängigen Normen und Verhaltensweisen der Welt au erhalb des Sanatoriums (von den Patienten in herablassendem Ton schlicht als "Flachland" betitelt) Alternativen zu diesen herausbilden, der Zauberberg ist geradezu ein "Laboratorium zur Beobachtung menschlicher Verhaltensweisen" unter diesen besonderen Bedingungen. Daher soll im ersten Teil dieser Seminararbeit die durch die Hermetik entstandene "Gegengesellschaft" auf dem Zauberberg untersucht werden, diese wird anhand des unterschiedlichen Zeitempfindens der Berghofbewohner und der dort vorherrschenden sexuellen Enthemm
