Allein durch diese Tatsache verdient der Chor besondere Aufmerksamkeit. Über die Chorlieder in den Tragödien, die Seneca eindeutig zugeschrieben werden können, lässt sich auch dementsprechend viel Literatur finden. Da die Octavia jedoch mit gro er Wahrscheinlichkeit nicht von Seneca geschrieben wurde, wird diese bei den Untersuchungen leider meist au er Acht gelassen. Aufgrund der Tatsache, dass in der Octavia sogar zwei Chöre auftreten, ist die Untersuchung der Funktion dieser Chöre ein besonders interessantes Thema. Um die allgemeine Funktion der Chöre zu erörtern, werden zuerst die klassischen Stellen der antiken Literaturtheorie betrachtet. Ausgehend von den Äu erungen von Horaz und Aristoteles zur Funktion des Chores im antiken Drama, wird die Funktion des Chores im römischen Drama mit seinem Vorbild im griechischen Drama verglichen. Nach dieser allgemeinen Untersuchung der möglichen Aufgaben des Chores im antiken Drama werden die Chorlieder der Octavia im Einzelnen betrachtet. Dabei soll jeweils zuerst die Frage geklärt werden, welchem der beiden Chöre das jeweilige Lied zugeschrieben wird, um danach die Funktion im Drama zu erörtern. Im Anschluss werden die beiden Chöre auf ihre Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten untersucht, um schlie lich in einem letzten Kapitel auf die Funktion der Chöre für das Drama im Gesamten einzugehen und die unterschiedlichen Forschungsmeinungen zu diesem Thema gegenüberzustellen.
