Dass sie jedoch eher selten vorkommen und traditionelle Modelle des Schulwesens vorherrschen, mag daher auf den ersten Blick verwundern. Im Folgenden soll die multilinguale Schule, die von vielen übersehen und häufig gar nicht in Betracht gezogen wird, ins Bewusstsein gerückt werden. Bevor jedoch näher auf die alltägli-che Praxis, Ideale und Fiktionen eingegangen wird, soll die Bedeutung, multilingual" in die-sem Zusammenhang kurz erläutert werden., Multilingual" (und parallel dazu, plurilingual") bedeutet wörtlich zunächst nichts anderes als, mehrsprachig". (Kremnitz 1990, 38) In der heutigen, meistverbreiteten Sicht zählt dazu auch der Bilingualismus, also die Fähigkeit zwei Sprachen alternativ zu sprechen, wobei der Grad der Kompetenz dabei eine untergeordnete Rolle spielt. (a.a.O.: 22) Eine extreme Position im Sinne der Kompetenz erwähnt Braun, indem er Mehrsprachigkeit nur dann anerkennt, wenn sie die perfekte, angewendete Gleichbeherrschung mindestens zweier oder mehrerer Sprachen bezeichnet. (a.a.O.: 21) Ähnliches gilt für das Verständnis von Multilingualismus als eine Situation, bei der mehr als zwei Sprachen in einer Gesellschaft in Kontakt stehen. (a.a.O.: 38) Übergreifender ist "[...] die Definition von Bilingualismus als Fähigkeit des Indiviuduums, sich mit beiden Sprachgruppen zu identifizieren (Malmberg, 1973)."
