Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 2,0, Universität Potsdam (Institut für Germanistik), Veranstaltung: Einführung in die Literaturgeschichte: Novellen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "Die Novelle ist die strengste und geschlossenste Form der Prosadichtung, die Schwester des Dramas; und es kommt nur auf den Autor an, darin das Höchste der Poesie zu leisten" (Martini, 437), sagte einst Theodor Storm (1817-1888) und hinterlie uns in dieser Überzeugung ein umfassendes novellistisches Werk, in inhaltlich und stilistisch vielfältigen Ausführungen. Heimatlich-bekannte Landschaftsbeschreibungen treffen mitunter auf idyllisch-lyrische Elemente und märchenhaft-sagenumwobene Bilder. Die hier zu untersuchende Novelle Auf der Universität (1862) gehört Storms mittlerer Schaffensperiode an und ist daher noch von seinem "jugendliche[n] Lyrismus" (Martini, 437) geprägt (wie er etwa in Immensee (1852) zu finden ist), steht dabei aber auch schon ganz im Zeichen des "idyllisch-resignativen" (Metzler, 595) Poetischen Realismus. Lenore Beauregard, die Tochter eines Schneiders, strebt nach sozialem Aufstieg, welcher ihr jedoch, aufgrund des unverrückbaren Ständebewusstseins der gehobenen Gesellschaft, verwehrt bleibt. Sie scheitert an der sie umgebenden Au enwelt, welche sie nicht zu beeinflussen vermag und entschlie t sich letztendlich für den Freitod. Ähnlich ergeht es dem Erzähler Phillip. Er gehört der hohen Gesellschaft an, flüchtet sich indes gern in die Einsamkeit der Natur, doch selbst dort kann er sich von den Fäden seines Milieus nicht lösen. Beide Protagonisten wollen jeweils aus ihrem sozialen Umfeld ausbrechen und beide müssen erkennen, dass dieses Vorhaben langfristig gesehen nicht möglich ist. Aufgrund der Milieudarstellungen des Erzählers einerseits und der Beschreibungen ursprünglicher Naturbilder andererseits, entsteht ein dialektales Spiel von 'innergesellschaftlicher' und 'au ergesellschaftlicher' Welt.
