Doch wurde dies immer wieder abgestritten. Ricarda Huch begr ndet das mit der Aussage: "Die Musen geh ren zu den himmlischen Gestalten, die Mann und Weib nicht kennen; der einzige Ma stab f r einen K nstler ist die Kunst."1 Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach kategorisierte die Kunst nicht in Mann und Frau ein, darum z hlte sie ihre Werke auch nie zur Frauenliteratur. Trotz alldem steht meistens eine Frau im Mittelpunkt des Geschehens. Egal aus welcher Schicht, ob aus einer Adelsfamilie, aus einer b rgerlichen oder einer Arbeiterschicht. Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach macht keine Unterschiede, zu mindestens keine moralischen. Das kommt daher, dass f r Ebner-Eschenbach der moralische Aufstieg viel bedeutender als der materielle Aufstieg ist. Anders ausgedr ckt, materieller Aufstieg f hrt sehr oft zu einem moralischen Abstieg. Auf diesen Aspekt weist Ebner-Eschenbach sehr deutlich in "Die Unverstandene auf dem Dorfe" hin. Die Erz hlung, um die es in dieser Arbeit geht, gew hrt uns einen Einblick in die Gesellschaft der Bauern- und Arbeiterschicht, zu einer Zeit, die man als h chst zerrissen und noch tief in Konventionen verhaftet sehen kann. Es wird auf die altmodische Denkweise und auf das daraus entstehende Verhalten jedes einzelnen Menschen, aber ganz besonders auf das der Marie Lakomy, hingewiesen. Ebner-Eschenbach hat einmal gesagt, dass sie die Erz hlungen an die Personen anpassen w rde und daher stehen nur au ergew hnliche Menschen im Mittelpunkt ihrer Werke. Marie kann man als eine dieser vielen au ergew hnlichen Pers nlichkeiten und Charaktere dieser Erz hlung sehen.
