Die Geschichte eines Überlebenden des New Yorker Comixautors Art Spiegelman zu stellen, scheint zunächst paradox, da in der Forschung neben der Legitimität des Comix als adäquate Darstellung der Shoah immer wieder auch auf seine Seriösität insistiert wird. Die kurz nach Erscheinen des ersten Bandes von Maus ausgelöste Kritik, die sich besonders in Deutschland auf die Wahl des scheinbar komischen Mediums 'Comic' konzentrierte, hat sich in allgemeine Anerkennung gewandelt. Maus gilt heute in der Forschung als Inbegriff für einen Comix, der eine im Zeichen der Postmemory stehende Darstellungsform der Shoah und ihrer Folgen für die Überlebenden und Nachgeborenen gefunden hat. Dem soll in dieser Arbeit, die sich primär als Problemaufriss und als Versuch einer Antwort auf die Frage nach dem Komischen in Maus versteht, nicht widersprochen werden. Allerdings zeigt sich, dass die Bewertung von Maus als legitime Darstellung der Shoah meist mit der Prämisse verbunden wird, dass der Comix nichts Komisches enthalte und kein Lachen auslöse. LaCapra resümiert entsprechend, dass Maus kaum Komisches beinhalte. Zwar handelt es sich bei diesem Comix dem Genre nach tatsächlich nicht um eine Komödie oder eine genuin komische Bilderzählung. Aber dennoch wird im Vergleich mit anderen, die Shoah thematisierenden Comics, vor allem im Vergleich zu Crocis Auschwitz (2000), deutlich, dass diese nicht nur ohne anthropomorphe Tiere auskommen, sondern jede Form des Komischen vermeiden, während Maus sich durch eine subtile, reflexive Komik auszeichnet, so dass das Komische ein Element des spezifischen Darstellungsmodus bildet, sich aber zum Teil auch auf inhaltlicher Ebene in Form v
