Doch wie kommt es dann, dass erst im letzten Jahrzehnt der Skandal und der Begriff des Skandals in der Wissenschaft weitgehend gesteigerte Aufmerksamkeit erfuhren? So kritisierten noch im Jahr 2004 und auch 1999 unter anderem Neu, Thompson et al: "Der Skandal, so scheint es, ist das Selbstverständlichste von der Welt, über das sich kein Wort zu verlieren lohnt". Manch böse Zungen mögen behaupten, dass das gesteigerte Interesse am Skandal damit verbunden ist, dass die Wissenschaft selbst Opfer von Skandalen wurde. Guttenberg, Schavan, Koch-Mehrin und Chatzimarkakis sind nur einige wenige, wenngleich prominente Beispiele aus dem politischen Umfeld, deren wissenschaftliche Arbeit auf die eine oder andere Art ein Plagiat darstellte und in Konsequenz des "Tabubruchs" skandalisiert wurden. Selbstverständlich geht der politische Skandal jedoch weit über plagiierte Doktorarbeiten hinaus. Wulf, Köhler und Boetticher stellen nach Thompson und Neckel den genuin als "klassischen" Skandalfall bezeichneten Vorfall dar. Ein vermeintlicher Korruptionsverdacht, Wirtschaftsinteressen von Politkern und die (sexuelle) Affäre mit einer Minderjährigen könnten als "Normalfall" des politischen Skandals bezeichnet werden - diese Fälle haben das grö te Skandalpotential. Doch was bedingt Medien, eine derartige Versessenheit auf Fehltritte der Politiker und den gestörten politischen Ablauf zu zeigen?
