Seit der Geburt des Landes steht Bangladesch in einem Konflikt mit der nationalen Identität. Obwohl die Mehrheit der Bangladescher muslimisch ist, teilt die Bevölkerung Bangladeschs die Kultur und Sprache mit den Bengalen in Westbengalen, Indien. Bangladesch ist ein politisches instabiles Land, das auf Grund seiner physischen Geographie sehr anfällig für Katastrophen ist. Anfang des Jahres 2013 spielte das Social Web eine Schlüsselrolle für die Mobilisierung von Massen und die Informationsverbreitung im Zuge sozialer Bewegungen in Bangladesch. Die Untersuchung analysiert den gesellschaftlichen Gebrauch und die Bedeutung von Social Web Anwendungen für cybersoziale Bewegungen. Es wird untersucht, ob ein gesellschaftliches Phänomen, wie das der Solidarität, im virtuellen Raum Social Web entstehen kann. Dazu werden zwei Fallbeispiele aus Bangladesch herangezogen: die Shahbag-Bewegung als Beispiel für eine Protestbewegung und die Hilfsma nahmen für den Einsturz des Savar Rana Plaza Gebäudes in Savar bei Dhaka als Beispiel für eine Krise und Katastrophe. Die Shahbag-Bewegung war eine komplexe Protestbewegung, welche die Todesstrafe für die Kriegsverbrecher des Unabhängigkeitskrieges, ein Verbot der Partei Jamaat-e-Islami sowie ein säkulares Bangladesch forderte. Die Ereignisse um Savar waren Hilfs- und Rettungsma nahmen Freiwilliger für die Opfer des Rana Plaza Einsturzes in Savar. Frühere Untersuchungen fokussieren sich entweder auf den Gebrauch von Social Web Anwendungen im Kontext von Protestbewegungen oder in Bezug auf Krisen und Katastrophen.
