Damit gelang es Fuentes einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der lateinamerikanischen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts zu werden. Dies mag auch daran liegen, dass der Autor anstelle allgemeiner revolutionärer Fakten und ausschlie lichen Kriegsschilderungen das Individuum in den Vordergrund stellt. Durch das Leben des Protagonisten Artemio Cruz werden die wichtigsten Ereignisse der Revolution repräsentiert, indem neben den wirtschaftlichen Krisen auch die sozialen Krisenmomente näher gebracht werden. In der folgenden Arbeit werden zum einen formaler Aufbau und strukturelle Besonderheiten des Romans thematisiert, auf der anderen Seite aber auch die zeitgeschichtlichen Fakten der Revolution mit dem Inhalt des Romans verglichen. Der Inhalt des Buches, dessen Titel im Deutschen auch unter "Nichts als das Leben" oder "Der Tod des Artemio Cruz" bekannt ist, wird nur grob und bezugnehmend auf die zu veranschaulichenden Krisenmomente wiedergegeben. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Hausarbeit liegt jedoch auf diesen ausgewählten wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Krisenvorstellungen, die im Roman neben vielen weiteren unterschwelligen Denkanstö en Fuentes , zum Ausdruck kommen.
