This Book is a combination of the diligent efforts of my 35 years of residence in the UAE. When translating a text within the field of law, the translator should keep the following in mind. The legal system of the source text (ST) is structured in a way that suits that culture and this is reflected in the legal language; similarly, the target text (TT) is to be read by someone who is familiar with the other legal system (corresponding to the jurisdiction for which TT is prepared) and its language. Most forms of legal writing, and contracts in particular, seek to establish clearly defined rights and duties for certain individuals. It is essential to ensure precise correspondence of these rights and duties in the source text and in the translation. Legal translation may also involve, Certificates of Accuracy, Witness Statements, Depositions, Trusts, Wills, Articles of Incorporation, Litigation Documents, Immigration Documents, and Property/Exhibit Labels and in some cases attendance in court by the translator(s). For instance, a power of attorney (POA) or letter of attorney is a written authorization to represent or act on another's behalf in private affairs, business, or some other legal matter, sometimes against the wishes of the other's. The person authorizing the other to act is the principal, grantor, or donor (of the power). The one authorized to act is the agent or attorney or, in some common law jurisdictions, the attorney-in-fact. Formerly, a power referred to an instrument under seal while a letter was an instrument under hand, but today both are signed by the donor, and therefore there is no difference between the two. Hence for any form of a legal writing, one has to be extraordinarily careful. In the case of the UAE, we were regularly adverted with a bilingual system, often causing a rift, as the Arabic Language shall hold precedence. Many foreigners are caught up in the surprise of holding themselves accountable, as they did not perceive the Arabic Text in their limelight. Hence the need for a text to overcome these odds was in the offing but never initiated. Nonetheless, up against all the odds, I initiated this project to balance this daunting task into a reality and through the Help of The Almighty, I achieved in overcoming those odds.
