About the Book For the longest time, sanitation received little attention from Indian policymakers and lawyers. However, the past couple of decades have witnessed a significant change in the manner in which sanitation is viewed in the country. While there is growing interest in the policy perspectives on sanitation, the emphasis on its legal dimensions has lagged behind. The piecemeal nature of the existing legal instruments and the lack of awareness about them have further contributed to the existing knowledge deficit. This book attempts to fill this gap by providing an overview of the main areas of sanitation law and policy through a selection of the most important instruments available in India. The volume consolidates the different elements that make up sanitation law and policy—health, environment, labour, infrastructure, and so on. It constitutes the first step in making researchers, policymakers, lawyers, and other stakeholders aware of the underlying legal and policy framework that informs the sanitation sector.
