The story takes place in the Aleutian Islands, where a young boy named Kotik lives with his family. Kotik's father is a hunter, and Kotik dreams of one day becoming a great hunter like him. One day, Kotik and his father set out to hunt for sea otters, but they are caught in a storm and swept away to a deserted island. There, they meet Matka, a female sea otter who has lost her pup. Kotik and his father take care of Matka and help her find her pup, forming a bond with the sea otter family. The novel explores themes of survival, friendship, and the relationship between humans and animals.
