This is the story of the legal side of the 1960s, how veterans grappled with trauma, the protests by draftees and those opposed to war, the struggle for civil rights in voting, housing, and employment, government interventions in the new Medicare and Medicaid programs, the stories of farmers, workers, consumers, and investors, the emerging technologies of television, consumer products, aviation, atomic energy, and medicine, the space race to the moon and the awakening of the environmental movement, the competition between new professional sports leagues, of Hollywood, television, and their stars, of rock 'n' roll, folk music, and music festivals, and of criminals of all stripes.

More than 500 legal cases are presented to provide a flavor to life in the 1960s, for the citizens in the United States and United Kingdom and for the athletes, actors and actresses, musicians, and crime figures that they followed. Sections are devoted to the legal issues around the domestic impacts of the Vietnam War including My Lai and the Cuban Missile Crisis, the achievements of women, Native and Black citizens; the right to protest the war and military draft; the Chicago 7 and Kent State; and the rights and relief for workers, farmers, consumers, and retirees. Many famous athletes such as Muhammad Ali, Curt Flood, Paul Hornung, Arnold Palmer, and Rick Barry are involved, as are actors like Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Lucille Ball, James Garner, and Sophia Loren, and musicians The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Joan Baez, and The Jefferson Airplane. Murder trials of Charles Manson and his "family," the killers of John and Robert Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, British killers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, and gangsters like Jimmy Hoffa, Carlo Gambino, and the Krays are presented, along with other kidnappers, robbers, murderers, and felons.
