A journey of literary and archeological research in Nepal and northern India during the winter of 1884-85 is an unchanged, high-quality reprint of the original edition of 1886. This monograph is a record of the travels the author undertook to catalogue the antiquities and search for MSS in the vernacular languages. There are 16 illustrations, many of which are of rubbings from steles and other sources. The latter a part of the book gives a list of the over 350 MSS that he collected during his travel in the winter of 1884 and 1885 this work is a reprint of the 1886 edition. The book is divided into two parts. Part one contains --Archaeological and General Report. Part two covers --Lists of MSS with notes on --Classified list of MSS. Personally collected Rough list of MSS from Bombay; Notes on particular MSS; acquired, Notes on MSS, in private possession and three Appendices on Inscriptions, Rough list of Jain MSS at Benares, Revised Tables of Kings of Nepal, with addenda to Catalogue and notices of criticisms thereon and also an Index.

Cecil Bendall was an English scholar, a professor of Sanskrit at University College London and later at the University of Cambridge. He was educated at the City of London School and at the University of Cambridge, achieving first-class honours in the Classical Tripos in 1879 and the Indian Languages Tripos in 1881. He was elected to a fellowship at Gonville and Caius College. From 1882 to 1893 he worked at the British Museum in the department of Oriental Manuscripts (now part of the British Library). He was Professor of Sanskrit at University College London from 1895 to 1902, and at Cambridge from 1903 until his death.
