An Introduction to English Grammar: Equally Adapted to Domestic and to School Education by W. Jillard Hort is a foundational text designed to teach English grammar in a clear and accessible manner. Tailored for both home and school settings, the book emphasizes practical learning, making it suitable for a wide range of students. It provides detailed explanations of grammatical rules, supported by examples and exercises to reinforce understanding. Hort’s systematic approach aims to develop proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English. This work reflects the 19th-century emphasis on education as a tool for self-improvement and broader societal engagement.
William Jillard Hort (1766–1849) was a minister known for his service in Cork from 1817 to 1849. He married Ann Gautier and was the father of five children, including Mary Hort and Anne Manson Hort Edgar. He was noted in the 1841 Census in Birkenhead, Cheshire, at age 75. Hort’s wife reportedly adopted Maria Ann Yandell, who married Unitarian minister William Hincks. Hort passed away around 1849 at approximately 83 years old.
