Beginnings of Vijayanagara History (1929) by Rev. H. Heras is a seminal work that delves into the origins of the Vijayanagara Empire. Drawing from epigraphical and literary sources, Heras examines the legendary foundation of the city, highlighting the role of the sage Vidyāraṇya and the significance of the sacred geography of Hampi. The book also explores the early rulers, particularly Harihara I and Bukka Raya I, and their establishment of the Sangama dynasty. Heras's interdisciplinary approach provides a comprehensive understanding of the empire's formative years, offering insights into its political, cultural, and religious foundations.

Henry Heras (1888–1955) was a Spanish-Indian Jesuit priest, archaeologist, and historian who profoundly influenced Indian historiography and archaeology. Arriving in India in 1922, he taught history at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, and founded the Indian Historical Research Institute in 1926, later renamed the Heras Institute of Indian History and Culture. His notable works include The Writing of History (1926), a foundational text on historical methodology; The Aravidu Dynasty of Vijayanagara (1927), detailing the last Hindu dynasty of the Vijayanagara Empire; and Studies in Proto-Indo-Mediterranean Culture (1953), proposing cultural links between the Indus Valley Civilization and ancient Mediterranean cultures. Heras also contributed to the study of the Pallava dynasty and the Jesuit conversion policies in India. His interdisciplinary approach and dedication to Indian history earned him recognition as a pioneer in Indian historical research.
