About The Author

Major-General Henry Rhodes Morgan (1822-1909) was a retired British Army officer and an early Anglo-Indian member of the Theosophical Society. In his professional capacity, Major-General Morgan served the English Government in India as a Forest Officer and Inspector, actively promoting the preservation and sustainable management of forests. His notable contribution to the field of forestry was his book titled "Forestry in Southern India," which advocated for forest conservation practices in the region. John Shortt (1822–1889) was a physician of Anglo-Indian descent who dedicated his service to the Madras Presidency in southern India. His areas of expertise extended beyond medicine as he delved into various subjects such as anthropology, agriculture, and animal husbandry. Notably, he conducted extensive research on snake venoms, contributing valuable insights to the field. In recognition of his contributions, a species of shieldtail snake found exclusively in the Shevaroy Hills was named Uropeltis shorttii in his honor.
