Vishnu Sitaram Sukthankar (1887–1943) was a distinguished Indologist and Sanskrit scholar, celebrated for leading the Critical Edition of the Mahabharata at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute. Trained in mathematics at Cambridge and Indology in Berlin, he applied scholarly precision to textual criticism. His work on Bhasa, epigraphy, and Sanskrit literature was pioneering. Sukthankar's meticulous methods influenced future editions of Indian epics, including the Ramayana. He passed away suddenly in 1943 while delivering a lecture series on the Mahabharata.
