About The Book

Through this rare book the author has been trying to highlight the history of Kannada literature from the early times uptill the 19th Century as some scholars have suggested that there may have been a Buddhist period in it before the Jaina period. The same suggestion has also been made by some Telugu scholars with regard to their literature and it has been said that Buddhist works have been completely lost in Telugu, though a very few Jaina works have survived. The Tamils do not divide their literature into Buddhist, Jaina and other periods, because their literature contains works by Buddhist and Jaina authors at different times. With regard to Buddhist works in Tamil, it may be said that they are very few; and they occur along with works of Jainas and others at different periods till the 11th century. It starts with a note on the Kanarese language and country. It has chapters on the Jaina period to the year 1160, Jaina Literature from 1160 to 1600; the rise of Lingayatism (1160); Lingayat writers from 1160 to 1600; the rise of Vaishnava Literature (1440 to 1600); Kanarese Literature in the 17th and 18th centuries; the modern period (19th century).

About The Author

Ramanujapuram Narasimhachar was born in 1861. He was an Indian-born author, editor and translator. He has to his credit 59 works in 167 publications in 3 languages. He is the author of various books such as Karṇāṭaka kavicarite, Hadinēḷaneya śatamānada koneyavarege and History Of Kannada Literature: Readership Lectures.
