"India and the War: With an Introduction" by George Sydenham Clarke examines India’s pivotal role in World War I, highlighting the contributions of Indian soldiers, resources, and support to the British war effort. Clarke, a seasoned colonial administrator, emphasizes loyalty to the British Crown and defends the Empire’s wartime policies. Through a mix of historical reflection and political commentary, he aims to reinforce imperial unity and justify continued British rule in India during a time of rising nationalist sentiment.
George Sydenham Clarke, 1st Baron Sydenham of Combe (1848–1933), was a British Army officer, engineer, and influential colonial administrator. Educated at Woolwich, he served in Egypt and Sudan and played a key role in shaping British defence strategy. As secretary to the Colonial Defence Committee, he was knighted in 1893. Clarke promoted practical, low-cost field fortifications over grand fortresses, ideas later validated during World War I. He also authored military works and fiction, including The Last Great Naval War (1891).
