James Keir Hardie (1856–1915) was a Scottish trade unionist and politician, renowned for founding the Labour Party and serving as its initial parliamentary leader from 1906 to 1908. Born in Lanarkshire, he worked in coal mines from a young age and became a gifted public speaker, advocating for miners' rights. In 1888, he entered politics and later helped establish the Independent Labour Party. Hardie won a seat in Parliament in 1892 and played a significant role in forming the Labour Party in 1900. A pacifist, he opposed World War I and campaigned for women's suffrage and self-rule for India.
