About The Book

The author has provided valuable insights in the book "List of the Trees, Shrubs, and Large Climbers Found in the Darjeeling District, Bengal." Among the listed species is Dillenia Indica, known as Chaltay in Pahari and Phamsikoly in Lepcha, commonly found in Mixed Plains Forest and Lower Hill Forest valleys. This tree blooms in September, and its fruit ripens from March to April. Recognizable by its red bark peeling off in large flakes, the wood of this tree is red-brown, hard, and heavy, although rarely utilized. Its fruit is remarkably large, resembling a big apple and enclosed by a fleshy calyx. The flowers are sizeable and white, while the leaves are large and rough.

About The Author

James Sykes Gamble CIE FRS FLS (1847–1925) was an eminent English botanist with a specialization in the flora of the Indian sub-continent. He served as the Director of the British Imperial Forest School in Dehradun and became a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1871, he joined the Imperial Forest Department in India, and over the years, he worked extensively in various regions, contributing to botanical knowledge. Post-retirement, Gamble continued his forestry work and gifted his vast plant specimen collection to Kew Gardens. He authored significant works, including "A Manual of Indian Timbers" and "Flora of the Presidency of Madras," leaving a lasting impact on botanical studies in India. He was honored with the genus "Gamblea" named after him in 1879 and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1899.
