The author has made a good attempt in striking and pleasant contrast to the suspicious Malaialis, were the friendly Kadirs, who inhabit the Anaimalai hills (= elephant hills) and the mountain range which extends thence southward into Travancore. This study was undertaken with a view to acquiring an addition to our existing fragmentary knowledge of the short, broad-nosed tribes of Southern India, round whom, as the living remnant of an ancient, and once more numerous race, much interest will be found to centre when, if ever, these stray notulae are amalgamated in book form. It discusses Kadirs of the Anaimalais; Malaialis of the Shevaroys; Syllabus of demonstrations on anthropology; the Dravidian head; the Dravidian problem. The book is the product of extensive study of this Dravidian race. The subject of the book is very interesting. It contains seven plates to delineate the subject in a proper way. The book is good for common readers.

Edgar Thurston CIE was a Superintendent at the Madras Government Museum who contributed to studies in the Zoology, Ethnology and Botany of India and published works related to his work at the museum. Thurston was educated in medicine and lectured in anatomy at the Madras Medical College while also holding his position at the museum. His early works were on numismatics and geology and these were followed by researches in anthropology and ethnography. He succeeded Frederick S Mullaly as the superintendent of ethnography for the Madras Presidency. He worked as a medical officer in Kent County Lunatic Asylum and became a curator of the museum at King's College before joining the Madras Museum in 1885 as a superintendent.
