Mahâbodhi or the Great Buddhist Temple Under the Bodhi Tree at Buddha-Gaya is a detailed work by Sir Alexander Cunningham, focusing on the ancient Buddhist temple located at the site where Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) attained enlightenment. The book describes the history, architecture, and religious significance of the Mahâbodhi Temple, which stands as a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists worldwide. Cunningham provides an in-depth analysis of the temple's construction, its various restorations over time, and its role in Buddhist worship. His observations also include the surrounding area, including the sacred Bodhi tree under which the Buddha meditated.

Sir Alexander Cunningham (1814–1893) was a British Army engineer and the founder of the Archaeological Survey of India. Initially serving in the Bengal Sappers, he developed a keen interest in Indian history and archaeology. In 1861, he was appointed archaeological surveyor to the Indian government, organizing the Archaeological Survey of India. Cunningham made significant contributions to Indian archaeology, writing books like Bhilsa Topes (1854) and The Stupa of Bharhut (1879). He also collected many artefacts, including Buddhist sculptures and coins, most of which were acquired by the British Museum. Cunningham’s work laid the foundation for modern Indian archaeology.
